This month we introduce you to Steelers diehard Kelly D'Angelo, SCM Member #2269. Kelly spoke recently with SCM Boss Lou Bouris and found out what makes this Black and Gold fan tick.
I didn't really "grow up" watching football. But once I started watching the Steelers, I was addicted. All three of my boys have been raised Steelers fans. In 2003 we had the chance to move to Pittsburgh and we did! We loved it. My husband was in management while we lived in Pittsburgh and often got to meet players when they came in for signings. I would get mad every time he would tell me about who he got to meet, especially when he would say Ben was there for a signing. I actually kicked him out of the house one day for telling me he got to have breakfast with Ben. So, the next time Ben was there for a signing, he took some pictures of him and got him to autograph a jersey for me. Kicking my husband out over Ben Roethlisberger would have to be the funniest memory I have.
Everyone that knows me knows that Ben Roethlisberger is my favorite player. He is an amazing quarterback, especially for his size. He's had his ups and downs, but I do believe he is a true Steeler. He's there for the team, not just himself. He shows that every time he takes the field. He never ceases to amaze me. I just wish he had the protection he had during the playoffs all year long! My favorite all-time player would have to be Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. I know that my choice doesn't go back as far as some of the other greats, but I love me some Bettis! He was an amazing player, and an amazing person all around. The sweetest thing ever was getting Super Bowl #5 before he retired. I don't think there was a dry eye in all of Steeler nation when we got to see the look on his face.
I don't really have any game day “rituals” other than walking around, without realizing it, singing "here we go" until game time, and I will randomly turn to my kids and yell "Who Dey" and of course, they yell "We Dey".
I joined the Steel City Mafia in November 2007. We had recently moved back to Mississippi from Pittsburgh. It was game day and we needed a place to watch the game. A friend of ours, who was already a member, told us about it. My husband and all three of our boys (ages 10, 8 and 3) are also mafia members. I'm currently the local boss in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Our game day hangout is at Slammin' Sams in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Being a member of Steeler nation means more to me than just being a fan. Everyone is like family. It's kind of like when you go to a family reunion. There's always cousins or aunts or uncles there you never even knew you had. Being a part of Steeler nation is like that times a million. Anytime you go anywhere, you meet a family member you didn't know you had, and they're always smiling, waiting to have a good ol' conversation with you. Being a part of the Steel City Mafia has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing people. And the best part is, they're all Steeler fans!
My feeling about our current Head Coach Mike Tomlin is that I think he is doing a great job.
His coaching style is a little "different" than what we're all use to seeing. I do think he needs to continue working on the o-line, but the most important thing is, he's getting the Job done! He's going to being our guys even further than he already has! Stairway to Seven Baby!
